King James Version

Psalm 126

About the book of Psalms

Celebrated as a joyful remembrance of restoration, this song captures the overwhelming relief of returning captives whose tears of sorrow turn into songs of joy. It sits as the seventh entry within the Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120 through 134), the collection of pilgrim hymns sung by travelers journeying up to Jerusalem for sacred festivals. The poet acknowledges past grief while looking forward to a fruitful harvest born from patient persistence. A central key verse reminds readers of resilience: "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy." (Psalm 126:5). The psalm offers an accessible, honest look at emotional recovery after long hardship.

1 When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.

3 The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

4 Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the south.

5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
